The Art Room -- Our Community Gathering Place

The Schoolhouse Art Room is tucked into the mountainside at the south end of the campus and was created from what was once the garage and motor pool area of Mutianyu Village during the period of collectivized agriculture.  Today it is a dramatic space with Great Wall views that we use for exhibitions, activities, and special functions and dining for up to 120 people.

The Art Room also contains a 30-square meter, bright and airy studio, designed to provide a tranquil atmosphere for our guest artists to create works of art inspired by the Wall and our village. The Studio is also used for classes as well as children's activities.

The Art Room was completely remodeled in Spring 2010 to add insulated roofing, thermal-paned glass, and LED lighting for energy efficiency. We also connected the handicap accessible restrooms to the main structure, and upgraded the facilities in the studio.

Scene for Community & Educational Events

We also stage lectures, performances, and holiday celebrations in the Art Room. Every year in November the Art Room is the scene for our Great Wall version of American Thanksgiving.

We try to make the Art Room available for educational and charitable organizations on a pro bono or reduced-price basis, depending on our business requirements.

Perfect Setting for Weddings & Parties

The Art Room accommodates up to120 guests for sit-down family-style or buffet meals. This wonderful space has hosted many weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and going away parties.

Stunning Gallery for Exhibitions

The main space is frequently the scene for exhibitions. We've shown paintings, photographs, sculpture, glass, and multi-media works. Check our Activities Calendar for announcements of exhibitions

We do have a small permanent collection of works created in or for the Art Room. We also have exhibitions of our Artists in Residence.

Works by our September 2010 artist in residence, Gregory Burns (click here to see Gregory's website); Paul Ranjard; Emily Spear; Han Weiqiang; Kit Green and others in our "Made at Mutianyu" program are displayed on a rotating basis. See below for some examples of their work. Emily Spear's 2008 acrylic mural (pictured below) depicting The Schoolhouse and Life at Mutianyu is mounted in the lounge.
