Retreats and Events at Mutianyu Great Wall
Only 60 minute drive out of the city, The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu is an award-winning sustainable tourism enterprise with unique venues nestled under the Great Wall. Our three restaurants, 11 rental homes, and secluded retreat center allow us to offer custom solutions for corporate sessions, team meetings, trainings, events, and dining experiences.
Our staff is nearly 100 per cent comprised of local villagers and they are proud of their jobs and proud of the chance to welcome visitors into our village community.
We also operate two other Great Wall view restaurants, a village resort comprised of renovated village homes that was featured in Architectural Digest, a boutique inn, the Brickyard, created from an old glazed tile factory, and an art glass studio with a working hot glass shop. All of our locations have spectacular views of the Great Wall and private outdoor gardens and terraces.
In our facilities offer a variety of custom activities, entertainment, and meals tailored to the needs of specific groups, ranging from intimate executive experiences up to 250 people.
Activities and entertainment on offer include noodle-making, art glass demos, live folk music, local folk dancing, lion dancing and wedding troupes. In addition we can provided guided tours of our village and hikes in the area as well as home visits to village families.
Our partners are also frequently invited to provide inspirational talks about sustainable tourism and the story of our business to guests. For example, one of our partners was asked to speak to a group of 230 managers from an Australian company who were on an incentive tour in China and dined with us after visiting the Great Wall.
Menus range from a simple bowl of noodles to barbecues to fusion grills to local Chinese food to Western fine dining personally prepared by our executive chef. Service styles include buffet, family style, and plate service. Our premium service includes signature linens, our own singing wine glasses, and fresh flowers from our gardens. We also stage receptions with beverages and appetizers.
All of our food is homemade from scratch, including the mayonnaise. Our emphasis is on local ingredients and we operate 5,500 square feet kitchen gardens using our own compost and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Our farming and procurement from other local growers is managed by an ecologist who serves as our sustainability programs manager.
We can accommodate special dietary requirements. For example, we recently provided vegan fare for the CEO of a major hospitality corporation.
We cater private receptions and meals in the homes in our resort and on locations on the Great Wall. We also offer a cold champagne supper with white linen in a clearing in a pine forest overlooking the Great Wall that can only be reached by a footpath up through orchards.
As mementos of the visit we can create special works of glass. We have also published three books and corporate customers oft-times present these.
Many of our group customers include a rest stop at The Schoolhouse just prior to arriving at the Great Wall so that guests have a chance to freshen up. Over and over, and especially by women, we have been told that our restrooms are great and I have to say that we designed them to meet the expectations of our guests and we put particular care into maintaining them very well.
By special arrangement with the Great Wall park we are able to offer our guests a VIP package that includes preferential parking and "head of the line" park and cable car entry.
The Schoolhouse team has helped a long list of clients to stage wonderful experiences here at Mutianyu Great Wall, including Coca-Cola, NBC, Hilton, Marriott, Visa, Kraft, Texas Instruments, General Motors, and many others.

Testimonials
We were impressed with the way your team took care of us during our two day stay at the Brickyard. The level of warmth of the hospitality was very refreshing and made a great impression on us. Match that with a wonderful setting, good food and accommodation, and you helped provide the perfect environment for our 2011 planning retreat. For sure we'll be back again and I want to wish you continued success with the expansion of your operations and in spreading a little more warmth around the planet!
- Philip Bryson, Area Vice President – North China, Marriott International September 2010
"The Brickyard is a unique venue, ideally suited for Executives to gather and think strategically, to stimulate and relax at the same time. This is the most restful, relaxed place I have ever been to in China, and for it to be so close to Beijing airport is a joy! The fresh air, quiet surroundings, opportunities to explore by walking or hiking in a natural setting make it a memorable experience rather than simply a meeting place."
- Lorna Davis, President of Kraft Foods China, July 2010
The Schoolhouse was the perfect venue for my team's mini-retreat and our team building activities. The invigorating hike along the Great Wall at Mutianyu, coupled with the mountain clean air, the Schoolhouse's local fresh food and ample meeting facilities, enabled us to step-back from the daily grind and relax, cultivate our working relationships and focus on our corporate and team goals and objectives.
- John W. Sullivan, Asia Legal Director, Texas Instruments Incorporated
The Schoolhouse is an exceptional place to entertain, whether for business or for pleasure. I am always pleased with the attentiveness of the staff, the great food and, of course, the wonderful settings, whether on the Terrace, in the Smithy or at the Canteen. I especially appreciate and value the Schoolhouse team's 'can do' attitude. They are always willing to try new ideas and are flexible with our requests.
- John Watkins, Cummins (China) Investment Co. Ltd.
To the staff of The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu Great Wall - Thank you so much for providing a great environment, menu, lunch presentation, and glass blowing dionstration for our Team Building Offsite Meeting. We accomplished our goals due in large part to the venue being just perfect. Mibers of our team agree that they look forward to visiting again for business events and for weekends and holidays with their families.
- Kristin B. Zimmerman, General Motors China (Beijing), Environment, Energy & Safety Policy
The Schoolhouse has been the venue for several A.P. Moller - Maersk events and our experiences are positive without fail. While meeting facilities are basic but adequate, the accommodation in individually styled villas is outstanding and the food excellent. Also, the uniformly friendly staff has made every effort to accommodate ourneeds. For company events, The Schoolhouse provides a tranquil and charming alternative to the drab anonymity of a five-star hotel function room. We will be back!
- Mr. Jens Eskelund, Senior Director of External Relations and Communication, A.P. Moller - Maersk (North Asia)
